Unless you opted for a living tree this year — or went with a not-so-eco-friendly fake plastic tree — your Christmas tree will soon be turning into a lifeless lump of firewood. Luckily for you, recycling your Christmas tree in Leicestershire is simple. Don’t put the tree in the rubbish and send it to landfill; give it new life in 2011! Here are your options:

1. Chop it up. Got a few extra calories hanging around after the 7000 you ate on Christmas day? Chop up your tree into small bits then either keep it to one side in a dry place to use in your chiminea during the summer or put into your green bin. The council will then pick it up as usual.

2. Drop it off. Make recycling your Christmas tree one of your first New Year’s Resolutions and take it to one of the drop off sites around the county.

3. Eat it. That’s right — eat your tree. In NY Times, an op-ed column by Rene Redzepi detailshow you can turn trees into nourishment. Apparently, “evergreens are delicious”! Read the tips — and the recipes for Spruce Butter, Spruce Oil, and Spruce Vinegar. (via Wasted Food)

Here in Leicester at Acres Garden Services we will be chopping it up and using it to keep us warm on some of the long summer evenings. How will you be recycling your Christmas tree this year?
